Earlier in the year I started making a crochet blanket out of stash wool - mostly Jo Sharp dk that I overdyed. I was joining them in a sort of window pane design, like this:
Now I've decided that I don't like this layout, so I'm undoing them (only four so far) and am just going to have individual squares. The only outstanding question, however, is whether to edge each in one colour so that the seam can be invisible. I'm leaning more towards joining squares straight onto each other and not worrying about the seam. I decided against joining as I go (you do this on the last rounds) because it's not as strong and I do want this to be a go-anywhere blanket. It's funny how my thinking on this project has changed so much: I bet I haven't thought the last on it, either.
Hi Jill
Just back from three days camping in Dorset, where I crocheted like fury! I think the join as you go method is less sturdy because there is only one thread joining at each point, rather than a whole stitch. Also, if the thread breaks then the round of crochet could unravel I suppose. However, I dont think its anything to worry about. I did a small blanket joining as I went and its fine for going on the back of the sofa as a cover up when its chilly.
Hoping v much to be at Putney on Wednesday. Am off to KnitNation tomorrow for a spinning lesson with a real expert.
See you soon.
Love,
Brigid

I am doing a crochet blanket too! - only mine starts off as three round circles, and I planned on doing last round and joining at same time. I hadn't realised that this is a less sturdy method? I want it to be a go anywhere blanket too. I am using what comes to hand in the way of woolly yarn, though I did go to IKL on Saturday and came back with a bag of Biggan, in bright colours that I knew I didn't have.....
